Why Zoooom Charges $100 Flat (And Not 5% Like Everyone Else)

By Zoooom TeamMay 16, 20264 min read

Most peer-to-peer marketplaces charge a percentage that scales with the transaction. eBay Motors: 12.55% on the first $7,500, plus listing fees. Bring a Trailer: 5% capped at $5,000. Cars & Bids: 4.5% capped at $4,500. Zoooom charges $100 per transaction. Flat. Same on a $4,000 commuter as on a $30,000 weekend car.

We chose this model knowing it costs us more on every expensive car we facilitate. Here’s why.

The work is roughly the same per car

Verifying a buyer’s driver’s license takes the same fraud-detection cycle whether the buyer is purchasing a $5,000 Civic or a $30,000 Tesla. Verifying the seller’s VIN against ownership records is the same OCR pipeline, the same document forensics, the same time. Holding funds in escrow for two weeks costs the same in operational overhead. Processing a chargeback dispute, when one happens, requires the same documentation regardless of vehicle price.

A percentage-based fee assumes that processing a $30,000 transaction is six times harder than a $5,000 transaction. It isn’t. The cost difference per transaction is tens of dollars, not thousands.

Percentage fees actively distort the used-car market

Here’s a problem nobody talks about. When eBay Motors charges 12.55% on the first $7,500 of a sale, the seller of a $5,000 car loses $627 to fees. The seller’s reaction: list at $5,627 instead, so the net hits the $5,000 they actually wanted. Now the buyer pays more, and the price-comparison value of the marketplace is distorted because every listing is inflated to absorb the take rate.

With a flat $100 fee, sellers don’t have to pad their list price. They list what they want to get, the buyer sees the all-in number (which already includes the $100 per California’s SB 478), and there’s no shadow inflation in the marketplace. The headline prices on Zoooom are closer to actual market prices than on any percentage-based marketplace.

It changes who can use the marketplace

A 5% fee on a $3,000 college-student car is $150. Combined with marketplace listing fees, photo upload fees, and the time investment, plenty of low-end private sales just don’t happen on big marketplaces — they end up on Craigslist instead, where they meet flaky buyers, scammers, and zero protection.

A $100 flat fee, on the other hand, is a sane cost on a $3,000 car. The buyer effectively pays $3,100 and gets actual identity verification, vehicle ownership confirmation, escrow, and dispute support — protections that are easily worth $100 even on a low-value transaction. We’d rather welcome the low-end of the market with real protection than price ourselves out.

The honest tradeoff

Flat-fee pricing means we make less revenue per high-value transaction. A $30,000 car generates the same $100 in service fees as a $3,000 one. Compare that to a competitor taking 5%: they’d make $1,500 on the same $30,000 sale. We’re leaving $1,400 on the table.

We’re fine with that tradeoff. The flat fee makes Zoooom the obvious choice for high-value private sales (where percentage marketplaces would cost the seller thousands) and an honest option for low-value sales (where percentage marketplaces would make the math not work). We make our revenue on volume, not on margin extraction from any individual transaction.

What the $100 buys you

For your $100, every transaction gets:

  • Bank-grade identity verification (KYC) on both buyer and seller
  • VIN-level vehicle ownership verification
  • Document forensics on titles, registration, and bills of sale
  • Funds held in regulated escrow until handoff is confirmed
  • Chargeback and dispute defense (Zoooom absorbs the cost, not the seller)
  • Title transfer support and DMV integration where available
  • Customer support before, during, and after the transaction

Same $100 whether the car is $3,000 or $30,000. Same protections. Same support. That’s what flat-fee pricing looks like.
